Interview
with Veg[pG] before, during, and after winning
the Montreal prelim to Toronto.
x]O2[x:
Veg (or Dante) is a member of pG and team Canada.
Veg was nice enough to provide us with an interview
(what with my charm and all... :) on pre-game
thoughts and strategies. The interview was
conducted live, and is retranscripted from
a live recording. I personally hope it will
be as enjoyable for you as it was for me. Have
fun.
teamareola.com: I'm
here with Veg, at the Montreal prelim. So,
let's start off with an unusual question. Name/age/where
do you live?
Veg[pG]: 18,
Male, Alexandre Hulak, French-Canadian, Montreal.
teamareola.com: Where
do you study?
Veg[pG]: I'm
going to Concordia University, studying civil
engineering, I just graduated from CEGEP, and
we'll see where it goes from there.
teamareola.com: Planning
on anything instead of progaming? :)
Veg[pG]: I'm
planning on quitting StarCraft, right
after (if all goes well) San Francisco, and
just go out more and do more "normal" things.
StarCraft is taking up too much time, and I've
gotta concentrate on my studies... it's a lot
more important than StarCraft. I might make
a comeback next year, before 2005.
teamareola.com: What
have you been smoking? Q-qui-quitti...Gah.
Pre-WCG, how do you feel?
Veg[pG]: I'm
feeling pretty good, though I'm starting to
get tired. I've been here since 9 am and right
now it's about four...
teamareola.com: Four
thirty.
Veg[pG]: Four
thirty... heh, just wanna start playing. I'm
playing a guy called Cheval, which is, er,
Horse in English, and eh, he looks like shit
so it's all good. And er, probably gonna face
Kiwi in the third round and I'm prolly going
to face Alumette later on if all goes well,
and I'm feeling good about the fact that it's
going to be bo3 in both winners and losers
bracket (no chance of cheese).
teamareola.com: Think
you'll win? :)
Veg[pG]: I
think... I'll most likely get top two if all
goes well. It's just about adapting the first
few games... just adapting my style to the
opponent, the keyboard, the mouse, and once
I'm adapted it should all be good.
teamareola.com: Who's
your biggest challenge?
Veg[pG]: Definitely
Kiwi. And then Taurent, or Alumette or Katana.
teamareola.com: Any
particular strategies you're planning on using?
Veg[pG]: It
all depends on the map, and their style. Like,
I know I'm going to be scouting Kiwi constantly
throughout the game because I know he likes
to hidden expand... it depends on their style,
and it depends on the map.
teamareola.com: So,
what do you think are the strongest parts of
your game, and which maps do you prefer?
Veg[pG]: Well,
I'm not feeling very fast today, so I'm hoping
my experience is going to come into play, as
well as strategy and tactics. I'm probably
going to be picking Korhal a lot, even against
Protoss. I've been practising a lot vs. Protoss
on that, so I'm feeling confident. I don't
think any Protoss here can be beat me on it.
So I'll just want to keep it fast, keep it
simple, fast wins under 10 mins.
After the games, before the final
teamareola.com: So
you're 2-0 Kiwi, 2-0 Taurent, 2-0 Spectra,
2-0 Cheval... how do you feel?
Veg[pG]: Pretty
good.
teamareola.com: That's
all you have to say?
Veg[pG]: Yeah,
that's about it. Top two, so... (Editor's note:
so he makes it to Toronto)
teamareola.com: Think
you'll make it to San Francisco?
Veg[pG]: Hmm...
there will be some pretty good competition.
Bulloch, Debit, Anxiety, Jiang, who else?...
help me out here.
teamareola.com: Think
Testie'll make it to Toronto?
Veg[pG]: Of
course Testie's gonna make it. Testie's gonna
be there... who else? Freak is decent I guess...
and then there's Korn.
teamareola.com: So,
beyond WCG... who's the man beyond the mask?
Veg[pG]: Uh...
teamareola.com: ...
that means you.
Veg[pG]: Oh.
Well... I'm just a simple, nice, littletown
farmboy sort of like Clark Kent, and I just
come here and put on my superman outfit and
own everyone.
teamareola.com: For
the record, is it Vedge or Vegg?
Veg[pG]: Vedge.
teamareola.com: Where
does that come from?
Veg[pG]: Vegeta
from DragonBall Z and no, I don't watch it
anymore.
teamareola.com: All
the respect I've had for you is gone.
Veg[pG]: Hehehe.
teamareola.com: So,
after you go to San Francisco, ---
Veg[pG]: IF.
teamareola.com: IF
you go to San Francisco, do you think you can
beat anyone?
Veg[pG]: I'm
just going to go for the fun of it, and if
I do well, then I'll do well. But, after seeing
players like Rekrul and iD.Ret from Holland
just be eliminated from brackets, I really
don't see how I'm going to do well, but who
knows. I'm probably not going to practice for
it.
teamareola.com: You're
in pG, correct?
Veg[pG]: Yeah.
teamareola.com: So,
do you have any inside information for us?
:)
Veg[pG]: Yeah.
He's in Korea and he's getting his ass kicked.
I'm sure he's having a good time there, so
I guess that's what counts.
teamareola.com: Do
you play with Rekrul online?
Veg[pG]: From
time to time, but I stick to more of the European
Tosses, European pGs.
teamareola.com: Do
you think Rekrul performed/tried his best vs.
Breakdown? He lost 4-1.
Veg[pG]: Did
he? When was this?
teamareola.com: A
week ago.
Veg[pG]: What
tournament?
teamareola.com: Face
to face.
Veg[pG]: Mmhmm...
Well, Breakdown is a really good Zerg, and
I'm sure the maps could have favored him a bit. I'm
sure Rekrul tried. Maybe not his best, but
he tried, and Breakdown just came out on top.
teamareola.com: What
do you think about the current Zerg progaming
scene? Is Zerg going to make a comeback with
JulyZerg?
Veg[pG]: In
Korea, if you look at Game-i, you have about
95% Zerg, so I'm sure Zerg is going to make
a comeback. It is kind of unfortunate that
not one Zerg made it to San Francisco, but
you can't really blame them for the maps. They
did kind of favor Terran, so, we'll have to
see.
teamareola.com: Top
3 players in the world right now.
Veg[pG]: Nada,
Ogogo and maybe DDang from SumaGO.
teamareola.com: You
place Ogogo above JulyZerg?
Veg[pG]: Yes.
Yes I do. It's cause I know him very well.
And I know he has potential.
teamareola.com: Non
Korean top 3?
Veg[pG]: I'd
probably have to put Froz and Elky at the top,
although I don't know if Elky plays anymore.
.. Mondragon, Fisheye, Froz. But I'd have to
think about it. And maybe Pj is pretty good
too.
teamareola.com: Shoutouts?
Veg[pG]: Shout
outs to all the cool people from WCG Montreal.
All of pG and rS. and ToT) all those crazy
europeans, and my favorite korean zerg ogogo.
And just wanna say good luck to everyone in
Canada at the wcg finals. Better come prepared
cause I'm gonna wreck havoc.
teamareola.com: Alright.
We thank Veg for this interview and wish him
luck in Toronto and San Francisco. Thanks,
Veg.
Veg[pG]: No
problem. Thanks.
