HnR)Louder
on StarCraft
Introduction by o]T3[o:
Fresh off an 8-1 upset in Nations War action
against Team Canada, LouderThanLove, or as
his clanmates know him, HnR)Louder, took some
time to give us a little insight into his life
and StarCraft gaming prowess.
teamareola.com: So,
we'll start with the easy, basic stuff - name,
sex, age, nick and clan.
HnR)Louder: M
- 23 - LouderThanLove (normal name) HnR)Louder
(my clan tag) BlackSunshine (ng-i)
teamareola.com: So
it started with LouderThanLove and went to
Louder when you joined HnR (which is the Honor
clan for the uninitated)?
HnR)Louder: yes,
HonoR, and not joined, founded. Pride and I
started it together nearly three years ago.
teamareola.com: You
live in the US, and Pride in Canada - do you
know each other in real life or is the pair
more or less coincidental? Is there some dramatic
story behind it?
HnR)Louder: No,
we don't know eachother irl. We met years ago
in ~nohunters. Pride kind of looked up to me
back then.
teamareola.com: Drat,
I was hoping for some kind of "You took my
woman, you bastard!" story which ended up with
you two being best buddies and sharing beer
out at some porch.
HnR)Louder: haha.
No, basically after i had quit bw for 6-7 months,
after I had my kid, I came back on, ran into
Pride and started playing alot. Chatting on
MSN, etc, and we ended up starting a clan together.
teamareola.com: So,
you're a father at 23? some (me) would say
that is quite young.
HnR)Louder: Well
actually i was a father at 20 - my daughter
turned 3 this may
teamareola.com: Does
your daugther play BW?
HnR)Louder: lol!
no.
teamareola.com: So
you're the only BW player in the family?
HnR)Louder: Yes.
teamareola.com: So
how long has it been going on - the BW playing,
that is? you took a break "mid-way" in your
career apparently, but did you play more or
less consistently before and after that?
HnR)Louder: Hmm,
Well i started playing single player starcraft
when I was a senior in high school, early 99.
Then started playing SC on b.net almost immediately
after I graduated in may 99.. later started
bw etc. Back then I didn't have a job or anything
so I just sat around playing. I definitely
played MORE then.
teamareola.com: Quantity
over quality, eh?
HnR)Louder: I
don't know, I got to play w/ lots of good players,
and I got quite high on the original game-i
ladder. I really started playing seriously
around xmas 99 I think. A friend pointed me
to stratforumregs - a long dead but once popular
channel. assem, "corbalt" (was sephiroth9000
back then), and I where all newbs together,
artosis too in that channel, begging eri to
teach us. He used to hang out there for god
knows what reason. We all played vanilla sc
99% of the time back then but left for ~nohunters
when we started playing BW. eri stopped playing
in sfr not long after naz invited him to liquid,
which, at the time, was like naz only I think.
Maybe naz and oaral, I don't even know. When
naz would hang out on vanilla in ladder challenges.
teamareola.com: Wait,
wait... what eri are we talking about here?
HnR)Louder: liquid`drone.
eriador. I've known them for a very long time.
teamareola.com: Who
do you play with these days?
HnR)Louder: If
i'm not playing gamei, usually with other hnr
members. Mostly pride insane and artosis, some
with testie. That's about it. I don't have
a big list of practice partners.
teamareola.com: Actually
I'm under the impression that a lot of the
well known names around the US and Europe don't
have long lists, either.. just the right people
to train with, I guess.
HnR)Louder: Maybe.
I'm not especially serious about bw. I think
my skill level is disproportionately high for
the amount of time I spend playing. I don't
really "train". heh
teamareola.com: So,
on to Team USA B, which is, of course, the
thing that sparked this interview in the first
place. Were you involved in the forming of
said team, or did you join up after it was
a fact?
HnR)Louder: No.
One day I just had a PM from inc asking me
to join. I replied "sure".
teamareola.com: inc?
HnR)Louder: Sorry
- 88)control. USA B is pretty much 88/hnr.
teamareola.com: So
Control is, if you will excuse the horrible,
and all too obvious pun, in control of the
USA B team?
HnR)Louder: lol.
Yes. By the way, i'm working on a team USA
B website that will be at http://www.thewarmachine.us.
Raist grabbed the domain name and i'm going
to provide hosting and put together a site.
teamareola.com: Nice
- are you a professional web designer, or?
HnR)Louder: Developer.
I don't do much design. I'm the "IT Director" for
an ad agency. I do web development, database
design, networking, blah blah blah boring [censored].
teamareola.com: You
beat Canada A, how exactly did that come to
pass? Did you practice specifically to beat
Canada?
HnR)Louder: I
think it goes without saying that we didn't
intend to lose. No, I didn't practice. Maybe
some of the others did, but I doubt it.
teamareola.com: I
hate asking this question, but I can't think
of a less cheesy way of saying it: how did
it feel?
HnR)Louder: The
only surprise to me was BJ beating testie.
I was a bit surprised by 3 2-0 matches I guess.
It was just funny to rub it in their face.
testie is such a trash talker when it comes
to NW =).
teamareola.com: Do
you have a list in your head of who else you've
beaten in Nations War on your way?
HnR)Louder: I've
actually lost all my 1v1 except vs Canada in
the ones i've played in. The first 2 nw I was
kind of rusty and just played like crap vs
good players and lost, but we won the NW anyway.
It was fun to beat up pride pvp. Game 2 was
some hero protoss on my part. Beating an army
that was 40 psi bigger w/ units to spare. We
really sucked vs ukraine this last week and
lost, 3-4. We were all playing bad and lazy.
I actually lost to a 6 pool in 1 game and a
7 ship gol/tank drop on my cliff in another
(on gorky), after dominating the guy in a "normal" game.
But anyway - we've beaten like, Spain B, Mexico
A, Canada A.
teamareola.com: Ok
some quick, easy ones. Favorite unit in game?
HnR)Louder: zealot
=).
teamareola.com: Favorite
spell?
HnR)Louder: duh
- storm.
teamareola.com: Favorite
matchup/least liked matchup?
HnR)Louder: Favorite
is pvp. Least favorite is tvt.
teamareola.com: How
can you love pvp?! that's heresy!
HnR)Louder: People
just don't understand it. =) It's like all
the people who say zvz is luck - pvp is luck
- tvt is luck - it's just because they're pissed
at their inability to play those matchups.
=)
teamareola.com: Most
under used unit that you would like to see
more of?
HnR)Louder: Hm,
well I could answer that a number of ways.
w/ units as they are right now, I would have
to say ghosts, but I think the DA is the most
[censored] unit in the game. Has great spells but
they cost way too much to ever be useful. They
fixed queens but never fixed DAs. =(
teamareola.com: Agreed
... queens are still underused though. :)
HnR)Louder: Yes
indeed. I think people underestimate the power
of ghosts though. They have pretty substantial
damage, and great spells. =)
teamareola.com: If
you woke up one day and realized you were a
zealot, your first thought would be...
HnR)Louder: "time
to quit playing bw".
teamareola.com: If
your daughter came home from school some years
from now telling your mom she needed a zergling
suit for a school play, your first thought
would be...
HnR)Louder: "cool".
teamareola.com: If
your wife came home from work one day and told
you she was working with GARIMTO, what would
you do?
HnR)Louder: I
can't even respond to that, my wife is a nurse.
I can't get a clear mental picture of that
scenario.
teamareola.com: I'd
guess for a pvp lover maps doesn't matter much?
HnR)Louder: Well
that's true I suppose but I still have my favorites.
nostalgia, gaema gowon, rivalry, and river
styx. Probably in that order are my all-time
favorites.
teamareola.com: Do
you pay attention to the progaming scene?
HnR)Louder: Of
course.
teamareola.com: And
who is your current favorite, and all-time
favorite?
HnR)Louder: Tricky
question indeed. Well right now I don't really
find myself rooting for anyone in particular
- but of course I always cheer for toss users,
especially reach and ra. ra is probably my
all-time favorite. I used to get his reps from
broodwar.co.yu before he was even "semi pro" but
he was up and coming on gamei and making a
name.
teamareola.com: Reach's
performance in 2002 was mind-boggling though,
even if he doesn't perform as well as that
these days I just can't get that out of my
head.
HnR)Louder: He's
doing well now. I'm impressed by july (like
everyone else). My "never vote against julyzerg
rule" on liquibet has certainly been paying
off.
teamareola.com: If
you could go to Korea, but you have a family
and all so you would have to bring them if
you went and... yeah.. not very realistic.
HnR)Louder: I
would've before I had a kid or better yet,
before I had bills to pay. =) I wanted to go
in 02, When I won the prelim in Dallas, but
i didn't make it to New York.
teamareola.com: You
didn't, why not?
HnR)Louder: Hurricane
sitting on Houston, no flights leaving.
teamareola.com: Sad.
HnR)Louder: Well
it's been a long time now. It was fun beating
dudey (ilnp) live and bluewolf.
teamareola.com: Top
five US?
HnR)Louder: Not
including those in Korea, based on what I know
(and I am probably not the best source here)
I would say... nyoken, cocoa, froz... hm, struggling
for 2 more.
teamareola.com: Right,
no problem. Top five Europe?
HnR)Louder: Non-progamer.
blackman, mondragon, zelotito, suker, dolife.
teamareola.com: Top
five Canada?
HnR)Louder: testie,
paul, pride, louden if he still played. bulloch
too.
teamareola.com: Are
you going to play WCG qualifying this year?.
HnR)Louder: Texas
qual got cancelled and ucga has tacitly refused
to contact the guy who's offered on their forum
to host an event, so, no. IF the online ladder
happens, i'm playing. I signed up and paid
my $15 long ago. Despite the fact they promised
a refund, I doubt i'll ever get it. They're
so unorganized, it's a total disaster.
teamareola.com: Shoutouts?
HnR)Louder: Everyone
in hnr obviously - especially pride ~ and my
poor kim who's been sucked into the south korean
marines! and everyone in USA B and team 88~
teamareola.com: I'd
like to thank HnR)Louder for his time and Born)Slippy
for giving the interview. For a replay pack
